How do I tell my boyfriend I love him?

I have only been studying Spanish for a few days. My boyfriend is from Mexico and I would like to tell him I love him in his native language but when I look it up I find there are a few ways to say I love you in Spanish. Can anyone tell me the right way to say this in this situation, although I hope it doesn't scare him off, lol.

You've known your boyfriend long enough to fall in love with him, but you've only started studying Spanish for a few days. What was holding you back?

That's a pretty important declaration, if it is heartfelt. I think that I would do it in a language that you both are familiar with, rather that risk some misunderstanding due to lack of communication skills.

That said,

Te amo is often claimed as the verb for romantic love (passion), but either amar or querer can be used. The level of feelings (lust, romance, tender feelings) will become apparent through context, actions, body language, etc. (If he can't read the writing on the wall if you kiss him after declaring your feelings, studying Spanish is the least of your communication problems.)

Thankyou for your answer. I have not known my boyfriend for an exceptionally long time, but I do know I am passionately in love with him. I am an older person and I think being older I have been able to work out my feelings more quickly. - cathyl61, Aug 20, 2011
