"contador" and "seguidor"

I can use "contador" for "counter," to count something. Can I use "seguidor" to mean "tracker" to track something? I know there is a small difference. For example, I can count down the days until my birthday. Or I could track how many times I exercise until my next birthday. Does this make sense? Thank you for your suggestions.
