Clase vs tipo , which is more common?

Clase vs tipo , which is more common? When you say que tipo or que clase de comida te gusta which is more common in spanish? or both are common among native speakers? or depends on the country?

I learned spanish in Mexico, and the way I translate these in my head is:

clase de comida = cuisine

tipo = type

clase might have to do with if its mexican, american, expensive (a five star meal), vegan

tipo would have more to do with what the actual food is: tacos, hamburgers, salads, etc.

I went to R.A.E. for this and found too many uses for these than I can manage in one post.

"Clase" can be a class of goods to students in a class.

"Tipo" can be a type of something and can also describe a person.

Samo, I believe you were told wrong.

Sometimes, "clase de" and "tipo de" can be used interchangeably. But they are different words. They're pretty much "class" and "type" in English.
