El cristal

crystal, glass; lens; window pane

DO NOT use the translator!! ¡No usar el traductor!

**Work must be done by yourself. This thread is about YOUR ability not the ability of the translator. wink**

Post your sentences in Spanish and English, then vote for the ones you like. The best answer will be chosen tomorrow on the basis of the greatest number of votes and language correctness.

These threads are kindly moderated by **Gintar77**. Please correct your posts according to Gintar77's indications and suggestions smile.

Posts which will not be corrected or accepted:
• Captions with 3 words or less
• Paragraphs with more than 4 lines
• Posts which cannot be understood it is read three or four times
• Posts which consist mainly of lyrics or idioms which do not translate.
• Captions copied directly from books or other sources.
• Multiple posts from one person, or those who don't write the sentences in both English and Spanish.
• Remember to use the Word of the Day in a typical Spanish sentence. This is great practice for you and for everyone that reads the thread to see how the Word of the Day could be used in a sentence.

Remember to correct your posts as suggested or they can NOT be "accepted".
Do not use subject pronouns in Spanish. (You'll be sent to the dunce corner!)
Please refrain from overloading with graphic content (ie; bold smileys, etc). It makes it harder for the correctors to be able to read your posts…. )

My Example:

Cuando mi perra era un perrita, le gustaba poner su cabeza fuera de la ventanilla de mi coche. A veces, quería usar el aire acondicionado, así que no bajaba el cristal. Desgraciadamente, mi perra aprendió como bajar el cristal….arrrggghhh….

When my dog was a puppy, she liked to put her head out the window of my car. Sometimes, I wanted to use my air conditioning, so I didn’t roll down the window. Unfortunately, my dog learned how to roll down the window…arrrggghhhh…

¡No te rías de mis cristales gruesos, puedo ver mejor que tú!. ¿Dónde está mi hueso, ha visto alguien mi hueso?

Don't laugh at my thick lenses, I can see better than you! Where's my bone, has anybody seen my bone?

Me hace feliz ver a una pareja que no tenga la suerte de gozar de gran belleza. Es como dicen 'La belleza depende del cristal con que se mire'.**

It makes me happy to see a couple who might not have been blessed with good looks, as they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

(if I wanted to better translate the might not have should I have used tenga instead of tiene?)

Nice couple! -- I think "tenga" would be better in this context. Also, I would break it into two sentences: gran belleza. Como dicen ... (not como "se" dicen) - gintar77, Aug 17, 2011

Para nuestro aniversario de boda de cristal (20 años) recibimos estos cristales muy especiales y desde entonces abrazamos el trago en vez del uno a la otra . . . . . .

For our crystal wedding anniversary (20 years) we received these very special glasses and since then we embrace the booze instead of each other . . . . . .

If I live in a glass house, I would be careful and not throw stones.

Si vivo viviera en una casa de cristal, me tendría cuidado y no tirar tiraría piedras.

on or at Christmas? could be regional lol we would say 'at' - Kiwi-Girl, Aug 17, 2011
I coulld use either as written, but if I said christmas day, I would have to say on, so maybe I am mentally inserting the day. I could also have said for, but then might have had to pick between por and para, which I was really unsure of this time. - Stadt, Aug 17, 2011
Thanks gintar. I am especially happy I got the subjunctive correct, as that is still a weak area for me. The mistake i did make I should know better, since I used past tense in English.:-) - Stadt, Aug 17, 2011
Kiwi- I asked my wife (plz see my profile where I admit my English is not perfect)- she says at christmas time or on christmas day. Gintar- I forgot to add, thank you so much for stepping in, it really enhances learning to be reviewed. :-) - Stadt, Aug 17, 2011
@Stadt: It's my pleasure. Great use of the subjunctive! By the way, if you had said "for Christmas" it would have been "para" :-) - gintar77, Aug 17, 2011
Thanks, I leaned that way, but I was not sure enough. Not that I get things that I try right, but I try not to have it too much out of my league, just a little. :-) - Stadt, Aug 17, 2011

Beautiful! -- **mi** esposa. The Spanish doesn't match the English. In Spanish you say "My wife's specialty is". To match the Spanish to the English: "Una especialidad de mi esposa" - gintar77, Aug 17, 2011

Leatha, it's "me gustaN". It needs to agree with "películas". Also, it's just "no tanto", not "no tanto mucho". - gintar77, Aug 18, 2011

Great job! Your Spanish sentence is perfect. One little mistake on the English: "I wish I had glass shoes" or "I wish I had some glass shoes". Not "a glass shoes". - gintar77, Aug 18, 2011
