Well if learning Mandarin is easier than communicating with your spouse, then you're wasting your time in this relationship.

When I am in Mexico, I often find myself stumbling over english words, as I rarely use english there, and even now there are many times that I am trying to talk to friends or at work and can only think of the spanish word, even though my first langauge is english.

Learning a new langauge is about words/grammer, learning to communicate with a spouse, is about understanding and being able to read between the words and the intonations. Not always an easy task.

Learning how to communicate with my wife, no. Learning how to communicate with certain women I dated but did not marry, yes.
