Los Castellanos de Perú

I just finished watching this short program on Los Castellanos de Perú, and found it to be rather interesting. Listening to the description of "Castellano Andino" (as well as reading some of the comments left by others), I couldn't help but notice certain parallels between this linguistic variation and another much maligned variant of Spanish/Spanish hybrid—Spanglish.

I wonder whether this variation, "Castellano Andino," draws the same sort of attacks in regards to its validity as Spanglish does, or whether it might be more widely accepted (being that in Peru, Spanish and Quechua have had a much longer time to intermingle than is true of Spanish and English along the southern border of the United States).

What did you think of this video, and if Spanish is your native language, what are your thoughts regarding "Castellano Andino?"

When I was in the mountains in Peru, (and even in the city) everyone refered to all spanish as castillano. There were a few indigenous words thrown in to talk about things that were strictly peruvian, but on a whole it sounded like latin american spanish to me....and more correct spanish then used in a lot of a parts of Mexico. smile The only major differences I noticed was that they would use slightly different words then Mexico for some of the names of places (school/stores/etc) but they were still spanish words that I had heard in different contexts before. It took me about 2 weeks to adapt my spanish to thiers and even then I would get funny looks sometimes and often got asked "if you are white why do you have a mexican accent and use mexican words"? But that opened doors for me to learn what the common words there were! smile

Chilenos have informed me that they speak Castellano, not Español. So what is the big difference, just the name?
