Que es la diferencia entre allí y ahí?

Good question. This one is always tricky. I believe that ahí is a little bit closer to you than allí. Like if the question is 'Where did you put the key?', you use ahí if it's over there on the desk (within sight) and allí if it's in the pocket of my coat which I left in the hallway (other room). Then you also have allá, which is even futher, like if I left it at my home.

I wouldn't be surprised if the meaning differs per region, though. I'll be sure to watch this question.
