Why does "el agua" have an "a" at the end?

Well, it has an "a" at the end because that is how it's spelled!

And just so you know, just because a word ends in 'a' doesn't mean it has to use 'la'. Words that end in 'a' aren't always feminine, just as words that end in 'o' or 'e' aren't always masculine!

While a good majority of the time, the whole "a = feminine, o/e = masculine" rule works, you cannot rely on it entirely. Spanish is a language full of exceptions.

agua is even more unusual than some words ending in 'a' which are masculine because agua is still feminine even though it takes 'la' in it's singular form (purely to avoid two a sounds next to each other) so don't forget when they're plural it's las aguas - Kiwi-Girl, Aug 16, 2011

You will find few masculine words the end with -a

el agua el ansia el reuma el karma el mapa el planeta el día el problema el arma
