"To be determined to" -- cómo se dice?

According to this dictionary, "to determine to do something" is "tomar la determinación de hacer algo". Do you need to modify this saying to become "to be determined to do something"?

For example, "He is a good student because he is determined to learn."

So literally "Él es un buen estudiante porque toma la determinación de aprender." means "He is a good student because he determines to learn". Is "He is a good student because he is determined to learn" an equally accurate translation?

Él es un buen estudiante porque toma la determinación de aprender. = He's a good student, because he takes the determination to learn/of learning.

He is a good student because he is determined to learn = Él es un buen estudiante porque está determinado a/en aprender.

I would say the same as Chileno:

"....está determinado a aprender"

or

"...está decidido a aprender"

I think in this case "toma la determinación" means "he has determination". Maybe someone else will comment.
