The V in Spanish is pronounced almost like a B a soft B, that's why your friend's name was pronounced just like vaca and not baca however, when you try to pay more attention to the name when it's pronounced you can distinguish the V from the B wink

l don't believe there's a meaning for lavaca in Spanish, but there is a very similar word which is lavada which means A large drawnet for fishing!

If you can distinguish them, then one (at least) of them is being mispronounced. - samdie, Aug 16, 2011

In Standard Spanish, B and V have the same sounds (their sound change depending on the word and placement on the sentence). "baca" is cow, while "baca" is luggage rack. Any of them can be used with "la".
