How do you know if a letter in Spanish is feminine or masculine? I am answering a question for my online Spanish class to say if a person received a B, C, D, or A, as a grade. Problem is, I have to put un or una in front of this letter. How do I know?

Proper names, like letters, take their gender after the generic name that encompasses them:

La letra a ? La a

La letra b ? La b

La letra c ? La c

Letters in Spanish are normally regarded as feminine.

However, if you come across a situation where the main term demanding a letter is masculine, "el A/B/..." is not to be discarded.

The letters of the alphabet are feminine. "Recibí una B" = "I got a B".
