When I was a child, if you were wheelchair-bound you didn't travel on public transport - it was near impossible. Today, thankfully things are very different. Most stations in Sydney have one of these access ramps. The guard of the train is notified ahead of time that a wheelchair-bound person will be boarding the train or exiting the train. The station master organises the ramp; the train pulls in and the ramp is set up. Many stations as well have "lifts" which aid access. This system is also available on public transport buses.
