Le pegué el tigre con un palo .. is this correct?

Le pegué al tigre con un palo cuando intentó morderme.

I hit the tiger with a stick when it tried to bite me.

(can I say - me intentó morder - as well?).

also... (do I need to write "le" here? as in - le pegué el tigre- If I leave it out it sounds ok to me. In fact I don't think it's right ot leave it in...(?) If I say Pegó el tigre without Le it sounds like the tiger is related to the action (the tiger is doing the hitting.

Yes you need to use "Le". "Pegó el tigre... Sounds very strange... If you use in that way, I can think that the tiger does the action, like: Pegó el tigre una carrera al darle con el palo. The Tiger starts to running when was hit with a stick.

I think the le is correct since you are using "pegarle a alguien", but it should be "al tigre". Pegar is intransitive in this usage and el tigre is the indirect object.

Le pegó al tigre (he or she) hit the tiger.

Pegó el tigre... sounds as if the tiger affixed something...

Pegar is intransitive in this usage and el tigre is the indirect object.

The tiger is indeed the indirect object, but "oegar" is transitive, with the direct object implicit:

Le pegó un puñetazo al tigre

Le pegó un golpe al tigre

Le pegó una patada al tigre

Le pegó un tiro al tigre

Actually, when you pronominalize it, you can easily say:

Se lo pegó.

pegar.
