"Enjoy yourself"

"Enjoy yourself"

This thread really got me thinking.

I did a Google search for "Enjoy yourself in Spanish" and this forum had an answer that I just didn't understand.

Now, I understand that Yahoo Answers probably isn't the most reliable source, so is this just that person's mistake? Or am I wrong?

It is wrong! It should be "Diviértete". - lazarus1907, Aug 10, 2011

Sonrisa I think you have your eagle eyes out.

I agree it should be diviértete, not diviértate.

Disfruta seems more usual to me. I think I remember hearing ¡Disfrutate! all the time from my Mexican family when I left the house.

Yes, that's wrong.

You could say :

Diviértase (usted form)

Diviértete (tú form)

I think the one who posted that example got a little confused and mixed them both up.

By the way, I would just like to point out that we don't say "Disfrútate" and this could be misunderstood. (I say this because I saw someone's post giving "Disfrútate" as example, but it wouldn't work at least in my country).

Lazarus PM'ed me and told me why that is wrong :red: Thanks, Vicente! - SonrisaDelSol, Aug 10, 2011
De acuerdo. Disfrutar, que sepa yo, no puede ser de forma pronominal (o al menos tal uso no es común) - Deanski, Aug 10, 2011

as I mentioned in another question, the word disfrutar is closer to enjoy and the word divertir is closer to have fun, so to enjoy yourself.......

¡Disfrutate! is common and means 'enjoy!' (enjoy your trip enjoy learning etc)

¡diviértete! is also common and means 'have fun!' (have fun on your trip, have fun at the beach etc)

So either works in that context, its mostly a style decision, would you rather say enjoy it or would you rather say have fun?

Thank you for the clarification : ) - SonrisaDelSol, Aug 10, 2011
"¡Disfrutate!" is quite good for "Masturbate yourself!" in Spain. If it is used as "Have fun!", it is not in any dictionary I've checked. - lazarus1907, Aug 10, 2011
The same could be said for saying enjoy yourself in english without context. I probably wouldnt say it in either langauge, it it IS what the question asks... - toothpastechica, Aug 10, 2011
Is it possible that disfrutate is used innocently in one country, not so innncently in Spain, and not at all in Chile? I will check with my friend in Mexico and post back. - Jeremias, Aug 10, 2011
