If the masculine plural of father is used for parents, is it also used for gay female parents? It is a strange new world.

In Spanish it is typical to use the masculine when you have a mixed gender group. But if it is all females, you use the feminine. So even though "parents" is typically translated as "los padres" that assumes a mother and a father. If the parents of a child are two women, I would use "las madres".

I don't know the answer to this question in Spanish because it could be a cultural thing, but gay couples in English are the two mothers, or the two fathers. I would suspect it might be the same in Spanish? Las madres de la niña, o Los padres de la niña.
