If we have to use proper English here, does that mean that the Americans can't use Americanisms as they are not proper English? hmmm

Too many spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and grammar errors for a comment. - lorenzo9, Aug 9, 2011

Hmm... I get the feeling Crystal is using "proper" to distinguish between British and American language styles. And to that I would say....

Crystal, just because something is American doesn't necessarily make it improper (as much as British folk might tell you) smile

The idea that British spellings/words are proper and American variations are not is anachronistic. Our version of English is just as acceptable as theirs (and it's really not that different in any case).

By proper English, we mean proper capitalization, spelling, and punctuation. Using slang is just a part of language, so we aren't really opposed to that, but it is mandatory to capitalize what has to be capitalized, spell words correctly, and put punctuation where it is needed.

Just be sensitive to the needs of native Spanish speakers who come here to learn English. Your first efforts have so far done nothing to help them, and may have confused them.

Everyone here is expected to be considerate and supportive of language learning. Please join us in that effort.

A good way to start using proper English would be capitalizing the first letter of your sentences, "I", and proper nouns.
