Go for it !

Sandy,

It is such an honour to be able to call you a friend. I am so excited for you. What a life-changing experience it's going to be.

I hope you'll be able to keep us posted somehow on how things are going, although I imagine that most of the time you'll be flat-out "like a lizard drinking" wink

besos y abrazos querida ....

(oh and "flat-out" - extremely busy/not much time for anything else...)

Sandy, I echo the thoughts of Vicente...

I watched the video (thanks for sharing). I had absolutely no idea that this was a problem in Peru. I also thought that the people of Peru were better off financially, although this could be just a certain area of poverty in the country. How long will you be there and what specifically will you be doing?

I'm not sure if this is your first experience doing something like this, but you will definitely be touched and also rewarded in a million ways you never imagined. I have been experiencing first hand and also hearing dozens of stories about the horrors of inadequate health care and/or emergency services in the Dominican Republic.

Each year, so many people die or are permanently handicapped due to the poverty and lack of services and supplies in the mountains of Jarabacoa, where I have been staying. The missionaries we are helping have personally found a minimum of a dozen (they actually lost count) people lying on the side of the road after an accident and had to place them in their own car and drive them down the mountain to Santiago or La Vega which is approximately 45 minutes away. It is really making me stop to think of how many people in the world die decades before they should or are permanently disfigured or handicapped for life....all because of poverty and lack of services, medicine and the proper facilities. The sorrow can almost consume us at times.

I applaud you for going and for serving the people of Peru. I have two friends from Lima and the people of this country are extremely warm and friendly. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers while we are doing something different, but similar in many ways a bit further north in the Caribbean. You have a kind heart. That in combination with your knowledge of Spanish is going to be such a blessing to the people of Peru, and especially to the women who are suffering unnecessarily from cervical cancer.

I hope and pray that you will accomplish everything necessary before the 17th. I know just how nerve wracking that can be. You will find yourself being able to retain so much more of what you learn because as discussed in the island thread, when you are emotionally invested or experiencing something on a personal level, you remember with much greater ease. You will probably remember the person and situation involved with many new words and phrases you learn.

Sorry for the long winded thread. It is just that this sort of trip is near and dear to my heart. wink smile

There are still some good people left in this world, and sanlee you're one of them. It will be a great experience and I know you'll do fine communicating in Spanish.
