Pick of the litter = la malla?

Pick of the litter = la malla?

From time to time in Santiago, I see the phrase "la malla" or just "malla." It seems to mean the best, cream of the crop, or pick of the litter. Is this a possible way of using malla or did I miss the meaning? Thanks.

De ves en cuando en Santiago, veo la phrase "la malla" o "mala" sola. Parece que significa lo mejor. ¿Es esta una manera de usar la palabra malla o estoy equivocado en mi entender del significado? Gracias.

Hi, TC. Apparently, if you are seeing it used this way it's possible for the locals to use it this way.

I couldn't find anything in the R A E that supports a "cream of the crop" translation, but here it is:

malla. (Del fr. maille).

  7. f. Arg., Bol. y Ur. bañador (? prenda para bañarse).

For "pick of the litter" or "cream of the crop" I'm finding " La flor y nata." - --Mariana--, Aug 14, 2011
Hmm... Maybe I missed the meaning of the signs. I'll have to investigate further. - tc84, Aug 16, 2011

I'm sure you already found the dictionary meaning. It says" network or mesh", maybe through this network you get the best? Anyway, this will bump your question and you might get the answer .Buena suerte.
