Am I correct in guessing that the accent over the "e" in "usémoslas" is just there so the stress stays on the right syllable?

Yup, that's how accents work. There's a system for syllable stress, it's always on the penultimate syllable if the last letter is a vowel, or N or S. If not, on the ultimate syllable. Any time at all the stress is somewhere else, you need an accent over the stressed syllable.
