Confusing English Words Challenge 25

Confusing English Words Challenge 25

10
votes

Algunas palabras en inglés pueden crear confusion en los principiantes.

Some words in English can be confusing for learners.

This one is to practice the following - wage (noun) to wage (verb)

Both native Spanish and English speakers may answer - but write both Spanish and English sentences.

I would appreciate some help in checking the Spanish sentences.

Agradecería una cierta ayuda en la comprobación de las oraciones españolas.

I will "accept" the best effort after about a week

Every attempt will get a vote.

NOTE - we would normally need 2 sentences in both languages that illustrate how the the following are used. It can be done in one sentence.

a) wage

b) to wage

Futher explanation as to the different meanings may be given.

Please do not suggest new words.

Well done (bien hecho) everyone

Here is the next challenge

Let's wage a war against minimum wage.

Hagámosle la guerra al salario mínimo.

I may be a wage earner, but this battle I'm waging could affect us all.

Seré un asalariado, pero esta batalla que estoy librando nos podría afectar a todos.

"The wages of sin is death."

"El pecado se paga con la muerte".

Wage = a regular amount of money that one can earn for work or services.

Sentence : The tread union call a strike in the factory because it want the management to increase the wage of workers.

La frase: El sindicato convoca huelga en el fábrico porque quiere que la gestión aumente el sueldo de los trabajadores.

To wage:
to begin and continue a war or battle.

Sentence: The king felt that his countrymen are waging against him.

La frase: El reino se dio cuenta de que la gente de su país habían emprendido la guerra contra él.

Hi Ashis - you definitions are good - but the English sentences have some small spelling / grammar mistakes - ian-hill, Aug 8, 2011

John wages battle with his wife, all she does is spend his wages!

Juán hace la guerra a su esposa, todo lo que hace es gastar su sueldo.

There's war waged at work, my boss lowered the wages of workers and nobody agrees it's fair.

La guerra está hecha en el trabajo, el jefe bajó el sueldo de los trabajadores y nadie cree que es justo.

(my Spanish is so wrong in this sentence.. aahhh)

Hi Sir Ian, greetings from Potosí, I'm working again with the Japanese people. It's far from the city, way to Uyuni, too much cold, I have to endure loads of privacies but my wages have got better. We are working to assure the water supply to Potosí. I like to be part of works like this because I think we're waging against poverty.

Hola Sir Ian, saludos desde Potosí, estoy trabajando otra vez con los japoneses. Está lejos de la ciudad, en la ruta a Uyuni, hace mucho frio, debo soportar muchas privaciones pero mi salario ha mejorado. Estamos trabajando para asegurar la dotación de agua a Potosí. Me gusta ser parte de esta clase de trabajos porque pienso que así estamos luchando contra la pobreza.

Los veo en un par de semanas, amigos. No existe acceso a internet en el campamento. : ) - nelson_rafael, Aug 8, 2011
Hi Nelson - glad to hear about your adventures. Privations - not privacies - ian-hill, Aug 8, 2011
and waging war - the verb needs a noun with it. - ian-hill, Aug 8, 2011
Nelson, «privaciones» = «deprivations» «...on the way to Uyuni...wages have gotten better...secure the water supply...fighting against poverty.» - StephenTrevor, Aug 8, 2011
...or like Ianhill suggested, «...waging a war against poverty.» - StephenTrevor, Aug 8, 2011

After waging war with a spouse, you will certainly pay the wages of sin.

Después de hacer una guerra contra una esposa, es cierto que vas a pagar la recompensa del pecado.

Between 1914 and 1918 war waged across Europe.

Entre 1914 y 1918 la guerra se libró por toda la europa Europa.

If you work in a shop the wages are not good.

Si trabaja en una tienda el salario no es bien bueno.

I have to go to work in order to earn a wage. Tengo que ir a trabajo para un salario.

I would not like to wage a war with anyone. No me gustaria conducir una guerra con cualquiera.

My attempt:

wage Es bueno cuando el salario mínimo aumenta. It is good when the minimum wage increases.
to wage El domingo, el 8 de octubre de 1871, los residentes de Chicago libraron guerra contra el fuego que fue a ser el desastre más grande del 19 siglo. On Sunday, October 8, 1871, the residents of Chicago waged war on the fire that was to become the greatest disaster of the 19 century.
