What is slang? A dictionary defines it as "very informal usage in vocabulary and idiom that is characteristically more metaphorical, playful, elliptical, vivid, and ephemeral than ordinary language"

Rules:

Do not look up the definition on a search engine.

No native English speakers - you can be fluent in English, but not a native.

A best answer will be chosen. The best answer will be the most accurate answer. If two or more answers are equally accurate, then the best answer will be given to the response with the most number of votes.

You can do as few or as many as you like. However, if you are trying to be the best answerer, you must do them all.

Please include your English level somewhere in your post. grin

And finally...Have fun!

Really try to practice your English -- post your response in English! I'll be more than happy to help you correct any mistake. If you absolutely have to, you may respond in Spanish.

Here's our list of English slang words or phrases.

1) Swagger

2) Schmuck

3) Hafta (think about it...pronounce it slowly)

4) To goof off

5) Chillax

10) Raise the roof

11) Wing it

And remember, no natives! grin mad

1) Swagger- someone who has swag, this cool stylish way about them (usually referencing how they walk, behave (like body language-- like pretty chill), and what they look like/ are dressed. hard to explain but you know when you see it. smile

2) Schmuck- a way to call someone you dislike (just a guess) smile

3) Hafta (think about it...pronounce it slowly)- have to. like you "hafta" (need to) do something. smile

4) To goof off- to act all silly and not serious. smile

5) Chillax- to chill, like to calm down and not be so worried, anxious, angry, and etc...smile

6) Take a hike- get lost, don't really want you here smile

7) To get a kick out of- to find something rather entertaining. smile

8) To cram- to try to do something usually done in a longer period time, but instead doing it in a very short amount of time. usually in preparation for something. like cramming (studying) for tomorrow's exam at midnight. smile

9) Green thumb- to be especially good with plants/gardening. have a knack for gardening. smile

10) Raise the roof- no idea. perhaps meaning partying like crazy?? You are correct. smile

11) Wing it- to do something without preparation (and usually hope that it turns out okay anyways). like to wing a test, is to not study for it. smile

12) Bling/bling bling- means money. can also mean you have lots of expensive jewelry (like silver necklaces, gold chains, diamond ring,...) smile

13) Have eyes in the back of your head- to be very observant. especially referencing teachers, they know what's going on all around them, there's no way to escape their sight. smile

14) Creeper- to be stalker-ish, and jumps into other people's business (and very suspicious as to the reason) . smile

15) Trippin'- it means cool. Not quite shut eye

(non-native, advanced- i hope)

Schmuck is Yiddish in origin, and refers to an unpleasant person. smile

A green thumb is very good at growing plants. smile

Bling bling refers to jewelry. smile

Raising the roof is something for wild parties. smile

A creeper is a sinister weirdo Perfect definition smile

Fortunately cramming is something of the past : studying very hard for an exam, usually after a belated start. smile

Mothers an teachers should have eyes in the back of their heads smile though they probably won't get a kick out of it , i.e, they won't enjoy the excitement it provides. smile

Most of these expressions are either known or have similar counterparts in other European languages. Pop songs also help to spread the good word(s). And of course a shift in meaning or emotions is not unusual in slang words . Perhaps the innocent looking 'take a hike' no longer exclusively refers to people on their long walk to Compostela. Haha! smile

And now my guesses:

  1. Swagger: behave like the hero in a sword-and-dagger picture shut eye

3.. Hafta : < have to Excellent smile

4.. To goof off : to say or do something stupid Pretty close smile

5.Chillax : < to chill, to calm down smile

11 wing it : to leave? shut eye

15 Trippin' : used to be attributed to Flower Power children on something stronger than tobacco, but probably this is slightly out of date Thank you for the clarification smile ( level: non-native, advanced)

Some of them have more than one meaning, and this is very good! 4 and 11 are good guesses but not quite on the money ;) - mistermouse, Aug 8, 2011
12/15 - Wonderful, Castor! Fantastic! - SonrisaDelSol, Aug 9, 2011
In number 15 I think Castor is referring to drugs, canabis would be the something stronger than tobacco. - MaryMcc, Aug 9, 2011
Quite right, Wilbur ;) - Castor77, Aug 10, 2011
Ohhhhhh. Well, in that case, "trippin'" can mean being under the influence of some type of drug (whether it be alcohol, caffeine, marijuana, etc.), so you now have a 13/15! Great job! - SonrisaDelSol, Aug 10, 2011

I have never ever heard these phrases, except one: "To get a kick out of", in a classical jazz song sang by Sinatra: "I get a kick out of you". I think it is something akin to I like you, you make me happy. smile

I get no kick from champagne

Mere alcohol?

It doesn't move me at all

So tell me why should it be true

That I get a kick out of you?

1) Swagger

Swagger is basically confidence! It's in the way you walk, the way you talk, the way you dress, and the way you handle a situation. With swagger, you walk with poise, sophistication, and a touch of arrogance.

That guy has such swagger! Look at how he owns the room when he walks in.

2) Schmuck

A moron, an idiot, a dimwit

Can you believe how he walks around with such an undeserved swagger? Ugh, what a schmuck!

3) Hafta

A way English speakers often say "have to", meaning an obligation or something that needs to be done.

We have to go see that show. ---- We hafta go see that show.

4) To goof off

Messing around, playing around, having fun; not taking something seriously

They were just goofing off, not fighting!

Kids, stop goofing off! You have chores to do.

5) Chillax

A combination of "chill", meaning "to calm down", and "relax".

Chill + relax = chillax

I'm so stressed out. I can't wait to just chillax this weekend.

6) Take a hike

When someone is annoying you, you tell them "to take a hike". It means "leave me alone", "get out of here", or "get lost".

I told that disrespectful schmuck to take a hike!

7) To get a kick out of

To find something fascinating, interesting, cool, fun, or neat!

I really got a kick out of finding out that Gwyneth Paltrow speaks Spanish!

You will get a kick out of hearing the comedian. He is hilarious!

8) Cram

Studying a lot the night before a big test or exam, usually resulting in an all-nighter; usually when cramming, you have not prepared before the night before

Fabio crammed for the math test, and it showed in his test grade. He failed!

9) Green thumb

Someone who enjoys gardening or planting; someone who is skilled in gardening and handling plants

María has a green thumb. Everything she plants blooms beautifully.

10) Raise the roof

"Raising the roof" is a dance move with both palms pressing upwards; to party wildly

alt text

Come on, everyone. Let's raise the roof!

11) Wing it

To do something without much preparation

She decided to just wing her speech

12) Bling/bling bling

Can mean money, but usually means jewelry, especially shiny jewelry;

alt text

Look at the bling around his neck!

13) Have eyes in the back of your head

To be very alert; knowing everything that is going on

Mothers are usually said to have eyes in the back of their heads.

14) Creeper

A strange person; a creepy person who is rather stalker-like

She just wouldn't leave me alone. What a creeper!

15) Trippin'

To be concerned or worrying; to make a big deal out of nothing

I can't believe you didn't wash the dog!

Chillax, why are you trippin'?

Well done, everyone!! grin
