Lesson 4.8 Writing

Lesson 4.8 in the writing section, we were asked to fill in the correct ordinal number for the follow: No tenía la clase de educación en mi (segundo) año. My response was segund sincen año is masculine, but the correct response is segundo. Why do we no omit the final "o" in this case?

There is "segundo", which is masculine, and "segunda", which is feminine. "Segund" is not a word.

You might be getting mixed up with "tercero" and "primero". Those, thirteenth, and others ending in "first" or "third" are the ones that drop the "o" before masculine singular nouns. Also, "postrero", which means "last", drops the "o" before a masc., sing noun.

You only drop the -o before singular masculine nouns with primero (primer) and tercero (tercer). That is how Spanish is (the "rule" I guess).
