Spanish Slang

Because slang is so regional and often what is acceptable in one place is not in another, you might be better off looking at lists or asking specifically to someone you know or one particular region.

I've learned one in the past few weeks. It means "hard times"

"vaca flaca"

It means "skinny cow". As far as I can tell, it is used by agricultural people to indicate times when food (or finances) are not readily available or affordable. In this case, cows would be skinny, since their diet of grass would not be supplemented with more expensive feed.

I find that I say pa' alot instead of para. You can also shorten nada to na' but it is slang. When I talk with my friend we say "No manches wey" alot, like a joke. It literally means "don't stain" but when you say it it means "Stop kidding" or "are you serious"

Ever since I found out that "chula " meant something like cutie or beautiful,I throw that one around. My recent favorite is" consultar con la almohada".( to sleep on it or mull it over.)

I didn't know it had bad conotations in some regions.Since this is a family site ,do I need to remove that one? - heliotropeman, Aug 3, 2011
@helio: I would recommend using "chula" when you're familiar with your subject, not so much with work associates, say, but more like good friends.... - cristalino, Aug 3, 2011

Hmm, maybe just the most common phrases that you use. For example, I use "por ejemplo" and "siempre" all the time. wink
