Other Meanings of "Mira"

At the beginning of many sentences, my Chilean friend says "Mira". For example, she'll write:

  • Mira, Chile está bien
  • Mira que interesante

I understood "Mira" to mean "to look" and the dictionary doesn't have a definition that fits this. What does this word mean in this context?--

"Mira" is the informal command form of the verb "Mirar," and it can mean:

Hey, look at this/that.....

Hey, guess what.....

Let me tell you something....

Listen up....

That makes so much sense! Thank you! I've been wondering what the Spanish equivalent to "hey" was. It's funny that "look" is one of them. :) - brianelliottlavoie, Aug 2, 2011

In Argentina they say "mirá". I am from Chile and I don't think that "mira" is informal.
