this is also a slightly odd question...

there is a word (calan) in Cornish which means -the first day of the month-.

I know there isn't an equivilant to this in English but is there one in Spanish since it has Latin roots?

Since Spanish calls the first day of the month:

el primero de ... [agosto] I would say no, or they would be using that word.

Spanish has a verb calar, but it has nothing to do with the 1º of the month.

Chances are the word was borrowed from Latin "calends", the first day of the Roman month, from the verb "calare", to call out. The word "calendar" has the same root.

Thanks, but is there a Spanish equivalant? - LarryLarham, Aug 2, 2011
Of course: "calendas", the first day of each month. - lazarus1907, Aug 2, 2011
