How to start with the salutations?

You could start with: Hello - Hola
Hi- hola (informal)
and then continue with
How are you? ¿Cómo está/s?
How are you doing? ¿Cómo estás?
What's up? ¿Qué tal?

How about "Hello!" - "¡Hola!"/ "How are you?" - "¿Como Estas?" Lesson 1.1 in Learn Spanish and 1.1 in Aprender inglés both do a great job introducing this subject. Enjoy!
