In Argentina one says "espéculo", I don't know what do they say in Spain - bzcenci, Aug 1, 2011

Why does manzana mean apple? That's just the word. I guess a little history says that speculum was the latin word for mirror (espejo) according to wikipedia. You could also use espéculum but it seems less common. Congrats on becoming my weirdest answer by the way.
Edit: oh if you are wondering how people don't get confused, the full term is "espejo vaginal". I would also assume based on context that when a doctor says I'm about to use the espejo that he's getting the speculum rather than checking his hair in the mirror.
