Is "buenos dias" always appropriate during daylight hours? Does one switch to "buenas noches" at dusk until dawn?

It is almost the same as in English. =)

You would use "buenos días" in the morning, "buenas tardes" in the afternoon and "buenas noches" in the evening /night.

Usually "buenos días" is used until about noon, "buenas tardes" until about 6 or 7 in the evening and "buenas noches" the rest of the night.
