Try not to use double quotes in the 1st line of the description. It causes problems in some browsers. - 0074b507, Jul 30, 2011

Depends on context.

I thought I was your friend - Pensé/pensaba que era tu amigo/amiga

I was your friend - Fui tu amigo/amiga

Casi siempre se dice esto al entender que alguien más es su mejor amigo. Pues, acentuaremos mucho la "I". Por eso creo que esta oración debe tener una "yo" en alguna parte. ¿Funcionaría algo como "Pensaba que tu mejor amigo era yo"? - webdunce, Jul 31, 2011
Yes, and also Yo pensaba... al usar el "yo" se usa para solo para enfatizar, depende de la situación. - chileno, Aug 1, 2011

"Creí que fui tu mejor amigo"

This is the best choice for two reasons.

  1. ) You don't mention when you where best friends.

  2. ) You use this form for description in text

I would say "era", because the possibility exits that you both are still best friends.
