Think of Helen Keller's struggles. It will give you the courage to fully pursue learning another language. grin

The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart.

I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble.

When I think of what she went through to learn to communicate, I feel a little ashamed about my lack of progress in learning Spanish. I can blame it on my age, maybe, but I suspect that is just that, an excuse.

Just thought that a mention of Helen Keller's teacher Annie Sullivan

would be appropriate.

Helen Keller addressed us in a school audience when I was in (I think) 9th grade).. The lesson that I drew at the time had to do with perseverance in the face of tremendous obstacles (as was, I'm sure, intended).

After having studied a variety of languages and listened to the speech of others who were deaf from birth, the lesson that I draw is that to speak well one must hear well. The people who ask how to say "buenos días" and both seek and are satisfied with something like "bwenohs deeas". will always sound awful. The only way is to listen to native speakers and imitate them.
