Hi AyaKoki,
It's because sandía, being watermelon, is rather big. They didn't eat the whole watermelon, only some of it.
In English I would say, "They are eating watermelon." I could say, "They are eating the watermelon, or they are eating a watermelon depending on the circumstances.
So they could have said, "Comen una sandía", or "Comen la sandía", either one implying they are eating it all.
Also notice in lesson 1.4 "Comen pizza". It's the same thing. They are eating pizza. They are not necessarily eating the whole pizza.
But in the same lesson we have "Comes una fresa." In that instance, it makes sense to use the article. In English we would say, "You are eating a strawberry." Or we could say, "You are eating strawberries."
Spanish is flexible in these matters, much like English is.
Right. "They eat watermelon".
Is that bad? Would you prefer, "They eat a watermelon" or "They eat the watermelon"?
Unless you mean they ate the whole thing, you wouldn't say that in English. Spanish is the same way, here.
