When is putting 'tan' in front of 'sólo' necessary?
Is there a general rule? And in this example, is tan necessary?
Just 4 more hours
Sólo 4 horas más
or
Tan sólo 4 horas más

I wouldnt say its necissary, just a style choice...using tan makes it more specific "there areonly 4 more hours" insted of the 5 hours someone is trying to tell you, as opposed to "just 4 more hours".
To me, "Sólo 4 horas más" is better in this application.
The expression of "tan sólo" (used as an adverb) adds a unnecessary degree of exclusivity or uniqueness to the statement. It would need to be surrounded by some special context to use "tan".
That's just my opinion.
