Planear o planificar.
I need to plan my vacation. Planear or planificar. Which is more coloquial? Tengo que planear mis vacaciones. Tengo que planificar mis vacaciones.

I would say that "planificar" goes deeper than "planear". "Planificar ", in my opinion, would mean detailed planning, with places to go, dates, schedules, means of transportation, etc, etc. "Planear" may only mean set a date and a place. It can also mean a detailed planning, but it's a little different to "planificar", wich will almost always mean to go to a detailed planning.
To round it up, I'd say that "planificar" is "planear algo en detalle".
I woud use planear if your using it in conversaion. A little less formal sounding.
Tengo que planear mis vacaciones suena más coloquial.
Mientras que, tengo que planificar mis vacaciones suena un poco más formal.
Aunque la diferencia entre ambas es mínima y es imperceptible la diferencia.
