What is the difference between terminar and acabar?
Whilst I know that they both mean to finish, i'm not quite sure in which situations to use them.

From my understanding, you use acabar to express that you (or another person/object) ceased performing a certain activity, such as: I stopped working on that thesis (for today), my car stopped having gas. The thesis does not have to be finished for you to stop working on it. You can just have given up (for the day).
Terminar is then, like Yeser already mentioned, to indicate that the thesis has been completed. That the task is finished.
Welcome to the forum Copycat. I'm not a native so you won't get fact from me but I believe terminar is to finish something or complete a project whereas acabar is more like I just finished or it just now happened or I just ran out of gas. I'll be watching this thread myself for some good answers.
