I gave her [IO] a present [DO]

Making the DO the subject of the passive: A present was given to her

Making the IO the subject of the passive: She was given a present

In Spanish:

Le [IO] di un regalo [DO]

Making the DO the subject of the passive: Un regalo le fue dado* / Se le dio un regalo

The IO cannot be the subject of the passive: Ella fue dada un regalo big surprise sick (very wrong!)

  • = the sentence sounds a bit strange, though.

In English you can use both objects, but in Spanish only the direct object can be used as a subject of a passive.
