Yes, definite articles are commonly used with abstract nouns like freedom, liberty, justice, equality, etc. Abstract nouns have gender just like tangible nouns. You aren't referring to neuter nouns are you (lo+adjectives) like «lo mejor» or «lo peor»?

Whether a definite article is used with geographical names varies with the object or name.
