A request for learning post participants

A request for learning post participants

This is not really a question, instead a request.

The learning posts (…of the day, etc.) all require that we correct the posts to the correct Spanish. In some cases that is done so that the original incorrect version is still available, and in some cases it is done in such a way that only the new correct version is visible (I know the incorrect version can be found by going into the edit function- but that is time consuming when there are a number of them).

One of the benefits of this site, as I see it, is that we can learn from the mistakes of others. When I have time, I really like to go through everyone’s posts, see what I think the errors might be, then go back through after the corrections, and see how the corrections differed from what I thought. That may be 12 hours later, and if the original is not visible, I frequently do not remember what it was.

Anyone here is connected to the internet, and so has access to an essentially unlimited amount of correctly written Spanish. What we get with these threads is a view of the mistakes that Spanish learners make, and get to learn what doesn’t work.

As an aside, I fully agree with heidita that trying sentences that are well beyond our scope makes no sense, no one is going to learn grammar points from that (anymore than they will from a correction to a machine translation). I think the ideal is to do a sentence that is a bit challenging, but where there is a reasonable chance you might do it correctly (hence my rather drab sentences). Now is probably a good time to recognize the hard work the reviewers put into doing the corrections, and once again note my great appreciation for their willingness to dedicate their time to helping us.

As another aside, I don’t think anyone has reason to be embarrassed from being corrected. We all are at different learning levels with different amounts of time that we have been able to dedicate to learning and different areas we have focused on. We are not a bunch of grade-schoolers who have been through the same classes and should know the same things.

Back to the main point- my request is that when the corrections are given, that you leave some evidence of what the original incorrect answer was. I am not sure if that is better in the way I used to do it, with 2 separate sentences, one labeled incorrect sentence and one labeled corrected sentence, or the new way that I have learned, with the cross out and bold. But whatever you do, please give me the opportunity to learn from your mistakes, so that I don't have to make them all myself.

Some people like to do as you're suggesting and others don't. I'm one who finds it inconvenient to retype the sentence if I only have to correct one word or a few letters. (which does happen once in a while) Maybe part of the reason is that I usually work on my iPad and I can only see one window at a time, have to switch back and forth, yada yada... At any rate, this has been requested a number of times with limited success in get users to change. At least for me, if you want to see what my errors are, you'll have to take it upon yourself to look at the edits.

If one simply copies and pastes the sentence a second time, and edits the second version, I do not see how it adds that much work, but I don't have an ipad, so I don't know how hard a copy and paste (not retype) is - Stadt, Jul 23, 2011
Actually, Leatha is right. It´s not quite so easy. - territurtle, Jul 23, 2011

Well and clearly stated, A very good and helpful idea to bold or strike through when editing so the corrections can be seen.Posting a corrected version under the original is also an excellent Idea. We need all the learning tools we can get.

Thank you, sharing the learning experience involves learning from everyone's mistakes. - Stadt, Jul 23, 2011

This is a good request and I will appreciate it if everyone follows your suggestion, too. If they don't it may be because of problems beyond their control. Yesterday, I tried to include two different hot links in a response. I edited three times after submitting my original answer but never did get it right.

The SD site often gives me a hard time when I try to post pictures, too. I know the site generally gives best results for users with Firefox, but my computer works better with Safari. If it's a busy time of day on the internet, Photobucket, which has all my photos, does not respond very well. So sometimes it takes a Very Long Time for me to post anything with a photo. If I want to post more than one photo in an answer, I pretend I don't.

Yesterday while editing, I saw the strikethrough on something I had previously changed my mind about. I hope I can do it again smile

All this is meant to say What a good idea you have. I hope I can do it.

Thanks, all that I am asking is that when the original sentence is corrected to the new version with the suggested changes, that the old version be left as well. That should not have technical problems. - Stadt, Jul 23, 2011
Actually, I would be just as happy if the sentence never got edited to the given corrections (then I could see the original before looking at the corrections)- but I think editing shows that you are understanding what the correcter is telling you. - Stadt, Jul 23, 2011

Good points Stadt. I always try add the corrections to my posts, with a before and after version - even if its sometimes many hours later. I make quite a few mistakes too, so stick with me mate and you will learn plenty wink

To be honest I tend not to read any of the other posts from a learning points of view. I read out of general interest and to vote on what I like, but I only read 'to learn' when I can see that the corrections have been added.

Thanks, I have gotten to the point that can guess what some of the corrections will be, although by no means all (or even most)- and using active learning always works better for me. - Stadt, Jul 23, 2011
me too. I often start off looking at one thing then go off on a tangent looking at something completely different! - billygoat, Jul 23, 2011
