Declension by noun case

I wonder why noun declension by case is not a feature of Spanish, except for personal pronouns; especially considering how close it is to Latin? How did the language 'evolve' this feature away? (Though I'm glad it is not the case, as that would mean having to learn to 'conjugate' nouns as well 
)

Probably because the grammarians were outnumbered by the people who actually spoke the language.
