I am disgusted, appalled and no longer have any sympathy for the opinions of certain Muslims.

Why? Because yet again we know we will not get any condemnation of this act of murder and cowardice. Why not?

I have always tried to have an open mind – but no longer.

A bomb (7 dead) in the city of Oslo and a shooting at a youth camp. (Presumably carried out by refugees) who had been made welcome by the Norwegian people.

This attack on Norway beggars belief. Norway is one of the most civilised, educated, tolerant, liberal, friendly, democratic, generous , open and compassionate countries in the world. The others are their neighbours Denmark – Sweden and Finland. If people can not live at peace with such hosts they can live in peace no where on earth. I lived there for 15 years and know what I am talking about.

Any organisation ( or sub group) that makes war on such a country is below contempt and has in effect declared war in the whole world.

A war which they can in no way “win”.

Do not doubt it friends – we are at war. – Maybe as never before in all our histories.

Can anyone suggest what these radical Islamic animals hope to achieve?

They bring disgrace upon their faith ( if they have any faith at all apart from hate )

May they rot in Hell!

"Certain muslims" like "certain blacks" or "certain jews" commit crimes. All these phrases turn my stomach. - rabbitwho, Jul 22, 2011
well, but it is true, what are you trying to say, that all muslims, all blacks all jews commit crimes? I hope not - 00494d19, Jul 22, 2011
I don't think what one of us does reflects at all on what the rest of us are. I would never say a phrase like "Certain English people caused the death of some of my ancestors." It indictes a whole nation! Horrible! What does it matter they were English!? - rabbitwho, Jul 22, 2011
I would also hope that anyone who lost loved ones because of those idiots in the IRA wouldn't associate it with Ireland or Irish people. Every large enough group will have some violent people in it. That's humanity! - rabbitwho, Jul 22, 2011
I'm sorry, I guess I'm too sensitive about this. But I've met too many wonderful muslim people to be able to attatch the same adjective to terrorists. I don't like it when people are tarred with one brush, I didn't feel the word "certain" made it softer. - rabbitwho, Jul 22, 2011
FYI, no where in the article does it say a Muslim group carried out the attacks or that they claimed responibility. In fact, it explicitly says that no one claimed responsibility... - Pauly_Glot, Jul 22, 2011
So my suggestion would be to tone it down a knotch for everybody's sake. - Pauly_Glot, Jul 22, 2011
@rabbit and kiyan - Excuse my French " Grow up" "Wake up" - Tone what down ? Murder? - ian-hill, Jul 22, 2011
A N D stop being so " holier than thou" and attacking me. - ian-hill, Jul 22, 2011
According to the New York Times a group calling themselves "Helpers of the Global Jihad" has taken responsibility for the attacks. - amykay, Jul 22, 2011
"holier than thou?" i wasnt attacking you. i was challenging your statements. but clearly, you're attacking me now. but its ok, i forgive you. - Pauly_Glot, Jul 22, 2011
I "attacked you" - I don't think so. - ian-hill, Jul 22, 2011
Well it turned out that the attacker has nothing to do with Islam. It's time to apologize, dude. - SpanishPal, Jul 23, 2011
Muslim,Islamic, is not a race it is a belief. And that belief says to kill non muslims. That belief is that there will be no peace until the jews have been exterminated! Whoever believes such will! Rot in hell! And that not by my judgment but by my acknow - EL_MAG0, Jul 23, 2011
The police have arrested the man they believe responsible , he is fundamental Christian . - ray76, Jul 23, 2011
There is probably no hell, but I would not wish it on anyone if there were. - NuriaMonfort, Jul 23, 2011

So, the guy who did it was a Norwegian farmer. Tuvo 32 años y fue alto y rubio. He was a right-wing extremist and a Christian.

The media is learning more about the suspect, and it is now being reported that this man was against immigrants and wrote blogs attacking Islam.

This tragedy is now being called a case of domestic terrorism.

This just shows we cannot be too fast to judge.

Right now, I'm not even concerned about who did it. I'm just thinking about the innocent, young lives that were lost yesterday. I am praying for the victims and their families. Hopefully, some type of charity will be established soon to help the country and the victims.

We could go back and forth debating who did it, but that's not going to change the fact that something catastrophic happened. That's not going to change the fact that, at most recent count, 92 lives were lost.

Well there you go!!! How's about an apology to every muslim from all the relgious people casting the first stone here!

the facts!!

Us non-religious types tend to wait for the facts to emerge before we make judgement.

Why just the religious people? Is a religious person attacking muslims for no valid reason worse than a non-religious man doing the same? And why are you making it look as if non-religious people are better? - S1r_Wakka, Jul 23, 2011

Why is this article all about Muslims? So far it seems that a rightwing extremists group is behind this attack. At least the guy who killed the 80+ people on the island was a member of it

I too am stunned and dismayed that this would happen in Norway of all the nations on Earth,

I too worked and lived in Norway for a year and in the course of my time there benefited from the warmth and decency of the Norwegian people. Ian speaks for me on that issue.

I keep an open mind to all people of honor and decency, I also feel however that wanton murderers like these, regardless of their stripe should not be treated as criminals, but as enemies of the state with the appropriate punishment.

I am from Norway, and these last 24 hours have been unbelievable. It was a shock, a tremendous tragedy. Two of the norwegian tv-stations have been sending a non-stop newscast since 16.00 yesterday (4 p.m.), 40 minutes after the bombing attack in Oslo center. It's hard to turn off the tv and go doing something else, like making food, go out, go to bed etc. Yet I've figured it's good for my mind to turn the tv off and try to do something else, even though within 30 minutes I have to take on the tv again to see if there has been any development. Norway is a small country with less than five million people, and even though - as far as I know - I don't know anyone being hit by any of these two attacks, it struck my heart that so many innocent people have to suffer like this, and that tragedies like this actually occurs. The whole nation is in grief. Yes, I have cried. The question I have is WHY?!?!?? Why would a norwegian man do this, to bomb and to shoot and kill his own fellow citizens? 85 youths are the numbers so far on people being killed at the summercamp, and the number is still expected to rise somewhat more. 7 people are confirmed dead after the bomb attack in Oslo, and may also rise. Several injured. Festivals and happenings through this weekend, has been cancelled.

I really can't believe this, it's sad and terrible, yet unreal, very unreal!

Ian, I share your rage. This all brings back the images from September 11 to me.

If militant Muslims are responsible for this action, I believe their eventual goal is to establish Shiria law throughout the world, thus ushering the coming of their Messiah. I could be totally wrong, but that is my understanding of the doctrine.

More people have probably been killed in the name of religion than for greed and power. And the beat goes on.

Hang in there, Ian. It is good to hear from you again.

As citizens of democracies we should always take pain to inform ourselves so we can make proper decisions that yield results, as opposed to emotional ones that simply yield self-gratification.

And you are absolutely right; this is a war, so let´s start treating it as such and get rid of these mistakes of humanity, rather than treating these horrible attacks as civil matters that need to be disposed of in a court somewhere.

Do not doubt it friends – we are at war. – Maybe as never before in all our histories.

Clearly, there is a war taking place. But not the war going on in the minds of those that made the above statements.

Financial Times Reports:

Terrorist attacks in central Oslo and the island of Utøya on Friday afternoon brutally brought to Norway’s home turf the fighting to which Norway has been contributing abroad, experts reckon. Norway participates in Nato’s operations in Afghanistan. Oslo also contributes to the alliance’s current campaign in Libya, where Norwegian planes take part in bombing raids. Details of Friday’s atrocities are still emerging. There are no credible claims of responsibility for either attack and the gunman was reportedly blond and spoke Norwegian well. But experts see an intent to punish Norway for its involvement in Afghanistan or Libya as the most plausible motivation.

It further states:

But other experts put more store by the Libyan explanation. “This is such a well-coordinated operation that it is natural to look elsewhere” than small jihadi groups, said Cecilie Hellestveit, a Middle East expert at the International Law and Policy Institute in Oslo. “These look like attacks on the political leadership [of Norway].” The bomb exploded in the government quarter and the shooting targeted “the young ideologues of Utøya”, Ms Hellestveit said. That reflects a different symbolism than previous actions related to the cartoons.

So the idea that some crazy Muslim that wants to establish Shariah law did this is simply coming from those that choose not to think within the framework of reality. If in the future this turns out to be the case, then we can he have an informed discussion about Islamic extremism. But as of now, the original post of this thread is simply emotional, . And it serves more to divide people than it does to unite them in their grief for the loss of innocent life.

New York Times says a group calling themselves "Helpers of the Global Jihad" have claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Here is what the NYT article actually said:

Conflicting reports centered on one group, Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami, or the Helpers of the Global Jihad. According to Will McCants, a terrorism analyst at C.N.A., a research institute, the group issued a statement claiming responsibility, saying the attack was a response to the presence of Norwegian forces in Afghanistan and to unspecified insults to the Prophet Muhammad. But Norwegian television reports later suggested that the group had denied responsibility. In the immediate aftermath of recent terrorist attacks, jihadi forums are often filled with claims and counterclaims that are impossible to independently confirm.

Because yet again we know we will not get any condemnation of this act of murder and cowardice.

The article went on to say:

Muslim leaders in Norway swiftly condemned the attacks. “This is our homeland, this is my homeland; I condemn these attacks and the Islamic Council of Norway condemns these attacks, whoever is behind them,” said Mehtab Afsar, secretary general of the Islamic Council of Norway.

So I think my original statement is still apt:

Tone it down a notch for everyone's sake.

Hmm... What has happened in Oslo is very unfortunate, but spewing more ignorant hate and advocating violence is not the answer.

The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it... Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate.... Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.

I didn't see this thread until yesterday after the lone perpetrator had been discovered. When I did read it the post had been closed for obvious reasons then later reopened. Such a tragedy but still I had to laugh at the way some of you guys all went at eachother. I look back in history and see some of the things that have happened in my lifetime. The Texas sniper who armed himself to the teeth and set up on a watchtower shooting innocent people, a lifetime of reading about serial killers who spend years on the loose killing indiscriminatly, The Baltimore sniper who shot victims from the trunk of his car, the Columbine incident where a couple of messed up teenagers decided for no political or religious reasons to go in and shoot up their highschool. Need I go on?All of these were acts of terror but with no real adgenda other than the fact that they were mentally deranged individuals. It's amazing how everyone jumps to conclusions. Yes, we are at war with certain extremists but can we blame them for everything that is wrong in the world?

Hola, amigos.

Something about this thread seems a little too familiar.

I'm not here to point fingers or accuse someone of doing something, and I hope I don't offend any of you by this post.

Go back a few weeks. Remember a certain thread on gay marriage? Remember people were fighting and flagging...it got way out of control. In the process, many people were threatening to leave. Unfortunately, some did. The SpanishDict community was separated.

I'd be absolutely heartbroken if that happened again, amigos.

That's all I'd like to say.

Gracias.

Peace on earth , peace to all just to update you all

Who did it?

Oslo police have charged a Norwegian man in connection with Friday’s twin terrorist attack on the Scandinavian country as the death toll rose to at least 91 people.

Police said the suspect was of Norwegian origin and appeared to have a history of far-right and “Christian fundamentalist” views, as officials all but ruled out involvement by Islamic extremists.

Muslim leaders in Norway

Oh yes, those in Norway....of course.

The problem is that those in the countries that count , that is Muslim countries, do normally NOT condemn these kind of attacks.

Reminds me of our stupidity in this country , where a terrorist attack is never condemned by the political party behind the attacks....and we still allowed them to be in the government, I mean, how stupid can you get? rolleyes
