"tengo dos perros"

You don´t need the article because "dos," even though it´s an adjective, is taking the place of an article.

"Tengo los dos perros" is valid, but only after these dogs have first been mentioned and it's understood which dogs are now being discussed.. - 005faa61, Jul 22, 2011
"Tengo dos de los perros" is also valid, but only after it's understood that these two dogs are being singled out from a group of dogs being discussed - 005faa61, Jul 22, 2011

I have two dogs = Tengo dos perros.

I have two of the dogs. = Tengo dos de los perros.

I have the two dogs. = Tengo los dos perros.

These are the types of article uses that beginner Spanish speakers get confused with. Good iteration. - unifiedac, Jul 22, 2011

It is possible to say, "tengo los dos perros" (I have the two dogs) if you wanted to be specific enough to use a definite article.
