I want to say there is no desert in my state. Do I use: "Hay no un desierto en mi estado." or "No hay un desierto en mi estado." I appreciate any help.

Just remember that no always comes before the verb to make a sentence negative. In this case the verb is hay, from haber, so it has to be no hay.
