Sospechar

to suspect

DO NOT use the translator!! ¡No usar el traductor!

Work must be done by yourself.
This thread is about YOUR ability not the ability of the translator. wink

Post your sentences in Spanish and English, then vote for the ones you like. The best answer will be chosen tomorrow on the basis of the greatest number of votes and language correctness.

These threads are kindly moderated by Heidita. Please correct your posts according to Heidita’s indications and suggestions smile.

Posts which will not be corrected or accepted:
• Captions with 3 words or less
• Paragraphs with more than 4 lines
• Posts which cannot be understood it is read three or four times
• Posts which consist mainly of lyrics or idioms which do not translate.
• Captions copied directly from books or other sources.
• Multiple posts from one person, or those who don't write the sentences in both English and Spanish.
• Remember to use the Word of the Day in a typical Spanish sentence. This is great practice for you and for everyone that reads the thread to see how the Word of the Day could be used in a sentence.

Remember to correct your posts as suggested or they can NOT be "accepted".
Do not use subject pronouns in Spanish. (You'll be sent to the dunce corner!)

My Example:

Sospechaba que alguien comió mis galletas, pero averigüé que el ladrón fue mi perro.

I suspected that someone ate my cookies, but I found out that the thief was my dog.

Funny!!! ...you are talking about something that your dog may have done (in the past), so I would use hiciera....(but I am not 100% sure on this one....) - 001a2987, Jul 21, 2011
Hey Bill perhaps - sospecho que me perro lo hizo. :) I think that sospecher + the subjunctive is quite rare and is more like you are suspicious (just a feeling) where + indicative means you suspect - a general observation rather than a feeling :) - Kiwi-Girl, Jul 21, 2011
oh and if it's with the subjunctive I think it might have to have 'de' in there - sospecho de que - Kiwi-Girl, Jul 21, 2011
If you fancy getting really technical here's a reference: http://buscon.rae.es/dpdI/SrvltConsulta?lema=sospechar - Kiwi-Girl, Jul 21, 2011
thanks chris. I deliberated on this, but thought that because the first verb (sospechar) is in the present, then the next verb (hacer) also needs to be present subjunctive. No doubt I will change it later :P - billygoat, Jul 21, 2011
thanks kiwi. I will take a look at your link :) - billygoat, Jul 21, 2011
Ay, Billy, te recomiendo de que esperes algunos meses antes de comprarte una sofá nueva . . . . :) - Ingeteacher, Jul 21, 2011
Its about time they printed the RAE in English lol ;-) - billygoat, Jul 21, 2011
lol Inga - mi tambien! - billygoat, Jul 21, 2011
kiwi. this is intersting now. I want to express doubt - therefore subjunctive. ie 'he might have done it, but also there are other dogs in the house'. I think I will dedicate the next couple of hours learning to sospechar lol. Hey thats what the word - billygoat, Jul 21, 2011
of the day is all about, right :-) :-) - billygoat, Jul 21, 2011
Exacto :) - Kiwi-Girl, Jul 21, 2011

Hi SP - have a look at the comments on Billy's post but I think that unless you want to say that you feel suspicious of something that sospecher is usually followed by the indicative and if you do want to use the subjunctive it may need 'de que' :) - Kiwi-Girl, Jul 21, 2011
Hopefully someone who really knows what they're talking about will come along and comment though je je :) - Kiwi-Girl, Jul 21, 2011
I certainly hope so!! - territurtle, Jul 21, 2011

funny Susana....the link that you had was to a website, you have to right click on the picture and then Copy Image Location...and that is what you use. Unfortunately, yours had % signs, your URL can't have % or spaces, so I used this website: - 001a2987, Jul 21, 2011
