The site shows that for the attainment of 4000 reps one receives the benefit of reduced advertising. Is this really the case? I have not seen any changes since my attainment of this milestone. Grateful for a response from one of the administrators.

Yes, I definitely noticed a reduction in advertising when I reached 4K. I wonder if it's still the case or has that changed? Let's wait a few days and see if your 4K status kicks in...if not, I'll write to Chris and get an answer for you.

Hola!

To be honest, I didn't notice much of a change either, but I don't mind.

Funny story that just happened: I had my sound on really high because I was watching a YouTube video that was kind of quiet. I came on to SpanishDict and there was some ad with sound...oh my goodness, I seriously fell out of my chair I was so caught off-guard!!

Fortunately, there are some ads with sound that have the 'sound off' already. alt text You would manually have to turn the sound on that ad.

(I'm not an admin, sorry!)

I truly despise Ads with sound! They should be outlawed. - --Mariana--, Jul 20, 2011

You just have to love those drop down ads that pop up when you try to type something in the dictionary search box. You try to click the search box, but you accidentally click the ad when it rolls over.

I was so busy having fun on SpanishDict that I didn't realize the ads have reduced drastically. However, they are still there. shut eye

Congrats on your first 4k smile

I have installed a program that cuts all advertisements. Only the Spanishdict ad about the SpanishDict iphone app appears. If you want, I could give you more details. smile

I would love to know about it- I think only the adds with sound or motion, or that cover things, are a bother. - Stadt, Jul 20, 2011
I'll send you a PM. - ianta, Jul 20, 2011

The only change I noticed when passing 4K reputation, was the 2-cm high static banner ad between the top menu and the main content disappeared.

The ads on the right were always there and not affected by increased reputation.

And now we have that large, disrespectful and manipulative banner ad above the SD menu, with animated and varying size, which appears about 25% of the time without regard to reputation.

Do the advertisers understand that when their ads make the site less usable, then they attract negative attention?? I am now less likely to want to buy products and services from any company that is so clueless as to advertise this way. I wouldn't care if their ads filled half the page, if only it would leave the other, more useful half, stationary enough to use. mad angry cool mad cool grin sick shut eye confused rolleyes

Yes you are correct. I just noticed the static banner is gone! Well that's still something I guess. - croberts, Jul 20, 2011

Other than a base minimum so that your questions get taken seriously (and I think a well written question gets a serious answer regardless of how low the reputation total), I am not sure what the points get you. I was actually a little excited about the idea of 4000 giving me "reduced advertising", but I honestly did not notice any difference when I passed that mark.

The above was my comment in January to Gekkosan's answer in this post:

The uncontrollable live videos when you are trying to do the flashcards and maintain concentration are particularly annoying.

Live videos while you are doing flashcards.....Really!? - --Mariana--, Jul 20, 2011
Really, sometimes you have to leave the flashcard, and lose points to shut them off with the pause, and sometimes the pause doesn't even work. - Stadt, Jul 20, 2011
The one with Sayoka Murase at least shuts off- some of the videos don't, and none of the pictures with motion do, although some will eventually run their course. - Stadt, Jul 20, 2011
