I,m about to start in Don Quijote in English which is my first venture in Spanish literature.
If all goes well maybe i can read the original Spanish version in the future.

Check out La sombra del viento, por Carlos Ruiz Zafón for a comtemporary popular and well written faux gothic read. Another contemporary is Arturo Pérez-Reverte who is making waves in Spain and beyond.
