Walking without a voice

Question

Have you noticed that every where you look, people are more cold hearted then they ever were?

What happened to the respectful, yet wonderful, "good morning" or "hello" from strangers on the way to work, in the park, on your runs, or even in a store?

There isn't a law against talking to strangers, yet we continue to walk by people with nothing more than a stern look on our faces.

As we do this, we leave people without any acknowledgement of their existence, this not only hurts their feelings, but it really hurts our feelings more.

Humans are social creatures that need to interact with others one on one, but by ignoring the presence of other people we are merely just ignoring our own needs and feelings.

Don't get me wrong, there are a few people who do say "hello" and have a conversation with you, but those numbers are dwindling and so are we as a social species.

Go ahead and try it: Walk passed past a stranger and say "hello", or even start a conversation. It will make not only your day, but probably theirs aswell! :D

I think of this as a small town/big city phenomenon. I've lived in both, in various countries, and small is often good when it comes to friendliness. Larger cities anywhere tend to require some reticence when engaging with strangers. I live in a small rural town, but it's also a beautiful tourist destination, and any time I'm out and about I'll have conversations with friends, acquaintances, and friendly strangers. It's great. We haven't escaped the kids-with-cell-phones phenomenon, but here they start at about age 12 with the seemingly surgically attached appendages. Ah, change--ain't it grand?

That is true. Except now, the "City" mindset is spreading, and the young ones are the first to get caught up in it. Later, it spreads like wildfire. :P - canadiangirl16, Jul 18, 2011

This phenomenon reminds me of a comic strip I read years ago. For those of you familiar with Dilbert (an American comic strip by Scott Adams), this sort of fits the situation. [I just hope there are no copyright issues]

It depends where you live I imagine, people around here usually say "hello" "Fine day" and so on. It was the same when I lived in Catalunya, it was always "Bon Dia" "Muy buenos" etc. Maybe Canada is a cold place in more than one sense?

Anyway... "Hi, how's it going, nice day isn't it?"

Dudo que esta falta de respeto siempre provenga de un corazón duro. Es probable que mucha gente también no diga los saludos por causa del temor de los desconocidos.

Por otra parte, estoy totalmente de acuerdo contigo cuando dices que este fenómino trae malas consecuencias para la sociedad. De verdad, no cuesta mucho simplemente decir «Hola».

All I see is people with scowls on their faces and 7 year olds on their cell phone! It's ridiculous.

I really wish some people would smile once in a while. I swear, some people have no clue how lucky they are...they should be more grateful.

As for the 7 year olds on their cell phone, that is just crazy. I don't know why someone so young needs a cell phone.

I do not like how everyone thinks they're too busy for a simple "thank you" or "good morning".
