Why is "Me gustas" I like you

Could I like you be said any other way?

"Me caes bien" from caerse bien, to get along well with someone is perhaps a less "personal" way of saying "I like you". As far as I am aware, using "Me gustas" implies that you are attracted to the person, perhaps have sexual feelings toward that person.

This word gustar constantly creates confusion among English speakers because it´s always translated as "to like" when it should be translated as to please.

You please me a lot ........ (Tú) me gustas mucho

Note the same construction:

You give me a lot ........ (Tú) me das mucho

You see me ....... (Tú) me ves

You believe me ..... (Tú) me crees

Technically, it means you are pleasing to me. In Spanish, some verbs such as gustar have as a direct object what would be the subject in English.

Me gustas means you are pleasing to me (literally to me you are pleasing) but we would express this in English by saying: ''I like you''

This is not really an answer but a continuation of the question since I'm just learning Spanish. I was told not to use Me gustas unless I'm talking about a spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend as it has the meaning Sheily mentioned above. I remember them saying to use 'Me simpaticas' or "Me encantas"... Is that right? I would love to be corrected on this because I am afraid to say any of it in case I get it confused.

"Me encantas" is a little strong for just liking someone unless you are very good friends. 'Me simpaticas' is safer for casual friendships - 005faa61, Jul 16, 2011
