Lesson 3.5 - Rayado means scratched

Question

I thought rascado meant scratched. My dictionary give lined or ruled for rayado. Explanation and clarification, por favor.

I think that rascar means scratched as your back, with your fingernails.

Rayar would be to scratch, leaving lines, as in scratching a record or someone scratching your car with their keys.

Spanish has more words than English. There are more nuances.

Rayado can also mean lined or ruled as in 'paper' and stripey as in 'clothes'. But Joyce is right too that a scratched disc is said to be rayado.

Rascado is scratched or scraped when something hard is rubbed or dragged over a surface.
