What does "leave the light on" mean?

I am glad I saw your light on and added you to the group, just always leave the light on...we talk every night!!!
Hedita was talking about Ian joining in on Skype; which is wonderful news, especially since he's been so ill. I'm not sure what leaving the light on means. Does it have something to do with the "change online status"? Do we set it to green - online or yellow - away?

She may be talking about leaving the status set to "Online", like you said, so that everybody knows you are there and available to talk on Skype.
Or she could be talking about Motel 6's slogan:

It's a way to say that "You are always welcome here".
