Repeated spamming

If there isn't a mechanism for locking someone's account for repeatedly being flagged as spam, there probably should be. Just a thought.

Sorry, but the webmaster is already following all of your suggestions, but because of the nature of the internet itself, there isn't much else he/she can do. confused

The spammers have many many ways of getting around most everything, except security protocols which would make life very difficult for us usersexcaim

The next step in site security (for them not to appear at all) would be for him to assign US a password twice day, and other such measures. You really don't want to put that burden on him or yourself. grrr

The best defense is the one SD is already using. The moderators who have privileges can delete the posts as soon as they see them. And users, like yourselves, can make sure you mark the spam posts to make it easier for the moderators to find. grin

After the moderator deletes the post, most likely, the webmaster already has code in place which blocks offending IP addresses and deletes their accounts. But that really doesn't help much, because these people are now hijacking unsecured servers (there are tens of millions of them in the U.S. alone) and using those servers for half a day or so before moving on to the next one. cool grin

There always has been spam here. The reason you didn't see it is because there has been a change in night moderators (my personal suspicion) and the new one(s) haven't kept on top of it the way Heidi does. smile

Check with Heidi about whether moderators are available to delete these pesky nuances before you probably see them.

I have been consulting in internet security, so if you want to PM me, I can give you more ugly details about the problem.

Agreed. Also, they should make a way to ban by IP to stop spammers from making duplicate accounts.

Not so easy really. IP's can be changed easilywink

The forum I moderate started an introductions section. All new users have to make a first post there and cannot post elsewhere until it has been read and approved by a moderator.

I don't know about the size of your forum, but it would be almost impossible here.

In any case, spammers are banned and IPs are deleted.

thanks for everybody's helpgrin

However, do not confuse a repeated silly question with spam....we get this here all the time, jeje

The forum I moderate started an introductions section. All new users have to make a first post there and cannot post elsewhere until it has been read and approved by a moderator. It is a little extra work for the moderators but worth it as it has virtually eliminated spammers and bots. Once they discover their posts are not getting through they give up.

The odd few that do try we don't approve their account so other users never see their post.

Not that I have noticed much of a problem on here but just thought I would share our experience.
