vos as a familiar form????

I heard people using 'vos' and it seemed like a familiar form for family. Can someone explain this to me and its use?

The simple answer is that vos is a regional substitution for tú.

The reason behind that fact is historical and involves the evolutionary use of vosotros, tú, vos, vuestra merced, usted, etc. for 2nd and 3rd person YOU used in Spain. The Spanish colonists brought the use of vos with them from Spain where it persisted in some regions while tú was adopted in others.

If you hear it used mainly with family that may be a regional usage. In other regions the informal tone (tú or vos) is used more commonly with the formal form only being used for judges, high state offices, etc.

vosotros, vosotras (you, plural informal)

• Vosotros/as is used to speak directly to a group of people you are very familiar with (see tú)
• Vosotros is used as the informal, or familiar, form of "you" plural in Spain. Most other Spanish-speaking countries do not use vosotros.
• Vosotros/as follows the same rules as nosotros: all men and mixed groups: vosotros, all women: vosotras.

vos (you, singular informal)

• Means the same thing and is used instead of "tú"
